Another great update from Eden!! Eden’s diagnosis of Type 1 diabetes came at the age of 17. After gaining a lot of weight & feeling she did not have the support from the health care profession she needed to empower herself. Eden set out on her own to learn & discover how to live life with diabetes beyond borders. Eden has a very busy life, finishing her degree at University as well as setting goals to manage her diabetes & lose weight in a healthy way before her graduation in May.

“Hey Everyone!
So yesterday was a big day for me, I wore a sports tank top while exercising! This may sound ridiculous, but I have never showed off my arms working out…EVER! The one and only time I did not have anything covering them at all was at my prom, and if you read my previous post…not my favorite time since I gained 30 pounds! At first I felt self-conscious, but then I thought no one is even paying attention to me. It was fantastic not wearing a hoodie while doing extreme cardio!!! OMG I didn’t get as sweaty and overheated….AMAZING haha. I felt confident that I could finally (in my mind) pull off this look! I will post a picture tomorrow.
Luckily I have one more week of classes left, and then I can start hitting the gym for longer periods of time, and really focusing on my weight loss! I would like to be at the gym for 1.5 hours a day instead of 1 hour. I am so excited to get this semester over with, since I have 6 university courses, gym, part-time work and balancing my time between 3 houses (my home, my boyfriends, and grandmas). I refuse to give up and I would like to be at least 158-160 before I walk on that stage to graduate. I am getting a dress in 4 weeks when I go to Toronto, and buying it smaller so it fits me perfectly on the big day” :)

“Hey Everyone,
Sorry I was away since Thursday with the family for a weekend shopping trip! We had a lot of fun.

So I thought I would write on a mix of things today !

When I was away this weekend I tried to behave the best I could (even though some regular chocolate just happened to work its way in their LOL) I got some diabetic/sugarless candy from my family today ….I had chai tea candies…soooo good! Go to Bulkbarn and get some!

I thought I would share some more personal stuff, since I know everyone grapples with this when trying/thinking about losing weight.

One big deciding factor when trying to lose weight is …why are you losing weight? I do not know about you, but just saying “to be healthy and be slim” can be a very vague reason to start to lose weight….Plus this is a LONG term goal.

A HUGE recommendation I have is to sit down, with a pen and paper and write small term goals to lose weight. For example here are some of mine (some I have already accomplished, some I have not)

1. Be able to do the stair master for longer then 10 minutes (I can do 45 now!)
2. Test my blood sugar 4-5 times a day (I have been good on this lately)
3. Go to the gym 4-5 times a week (finally getting this habit)
4. Get to second goal weight 165 (I hope to be here around May 10th this year)
5. Drink 8 glasses of water a day (very hard to do ….lol and not much fun)
6. Take vitamins every day
7. Be able to feel confident when I am in public
8. Be able to wear clothes that are comfortable and make me look and feel AMAZING
9. Have more self-confidence when doing day-today stuff
10. Be fit and ready trying on wedding dresses.

OK I wrote 10 of my 20 down lol Some of these are going to take a lot of work for me (especially 7 and 9). I have always struggled with self-confidence issues. But one incident that really hurt me I will discuss since I think most have gone through a similar situation.

Two years ago during the summer my boyfriend (who is beyond amazing in every way) and his friends wanted to go to the beach down the street. Now a big girl with confidence issues does not get excited about this! I literally felt my blood sugars go up from stress and I did not want to go. This would involve me being in a bathing suit, wet and in front of people in shape….needless to say WORST NIGHTMARE.

I decided to go since I also did not want to be home alone (which would make me feel worse). So I went…I sat on the beach with jeans, a black hoodie and tank, and running shoes (put in mind it was 30 degrees out!) I was hot, I felt fat and awful and everyone was having a great time in bikinis swimming. I luckily had sun glasses on because I started to cry.

Every time I feel like eating something like a whole cake or a bag of chips, I think of that day. I felt so left out, and awful! Yes everyone cheats once and awhile, but I refuse to ever feel like that again. So I hope you guys push yourself, like walking an extra 5 minutes, or eating popcorn instead of cake, etc etc.

Hey Everyone! My name is Eden, I am 21 years old, a student, a girl trying to lose weight and well a Type 1 Diabetic. I thought I would share my weight loss journey, and all the tips and tricks that I have found helpful. But first a little about me, and my journey to where I am.
I was diagnosed when I was 17 years old with type one diabetes. It does not run in my family, and I was the “lucky” one who got it ha ha. When I was younger I also battled with a disease called Graves disease, which weakened my immune system (luckily I am still in remission), and the doctors believe that this is why I got Diabetes. While staying in the hospital, I realized that I am going to be on my own dealing with this disease. I had horrible hospital staff, uneducated people trying to teach me about Diabetes! One nurse thought I get my insulin after my meals, and another decided to tell my mother who was in a state of panic, that I may go into a coma at any given minute if my sugars were low….needless to say my mother had a breakdown. It was not a great start to say the least, and has continued to be a crappy situation. So ever since I was diagnosed, it’s been me, my body, and well the internet trying to figure this whole thing out!
So I thought I would write a daily blog post about my weight loss journey I am currently on  It is hard for diabetics sometimes because unlike “normal” people, we have to make sure our sugars are constantly ok…no highs or lows, and our heart rate is okay. I hate using the word “normal” but I think you understand what I mean. I am still trying to figure out what works best for my body, but I have learned A LOT throughout my journey thus far. I have always been slightly overweight, but when I was diagnosed I gained almost 35 pounds….I was shocked. All this happened during the month of my prom and graduation. Needless to say…I hated the photos! I was 205 pounds and I felt depressed, and I still battle with these feelings. It took me a long time to start being healthy. During October 2012 I joined a local nutrition program, and I loved it! I did not follow it completely and I did not do a lot of physical exercise, but I still dropped 10 pounds within the first 2 months! I was so happy, and during December and the Christmas dinners….I lost track of my program. It suddenly clicked in me that why am I doing this to myself? My university graduation is around the corner, and I do not want to feel the same way I did in high school! So in January I started to follow the program. It is a bit hard to change how you eat and I am still learning 😛 I go to the gym 4 sometimes 5 days a week (hard with my schedule of 6 courses, work and homework!) But of course I have had a bit of a battle with my sugars which I think I finally “cracked the code” on. Needless to say I am 174 pounds now….31 pounds down from my heaviest! I would like to be around 145-150 pounds for my height (5’6). My graduation is on May 31, 2013 and I am hoping to get to 158-160 by graduation  It is going to be hard, but hopefully you will all support me  I will share photos of myself, and foods I make….I LOVE COOKING! And anything else I find interesting  Hopefully I inspire some of you with my story, and with my future posts  I won’t lie, it is difficult, but it is not as hard if you have someone you can connect with who understands what you are going through  You can follow me on instagram edenalexandriadaly to see my photos day-to-day 
